Scrap is an Aladdin’s Cave for any maker so I have had to set some parameters with regards to choice of materials, deciding to focus on electrical and other types of cable.
The dissection of some yellow electrical cable revealed 5 different materials , the yellow outer fabric, white plastic casing and three different coloured electrical wires! A first attempt twining the coloured wires produced an interesting but floppy structure (Above, bottom right). I needed a more robust wire to carry the weave so set about deconstructing another cable which revealed a set of more rigid wires (below top right).
The combination of the strong silver wired warp with the weft of flexible electrical wire resulted in a much firmer structure but maintaining flexibility allowing it to be shaped/ modelled as required and with the potential to use on a larger scale
